Buttons and switches

Buttons & switches should be easy to see, easy to reach and use and consistent across a site or organisation. Often they are either too small and difficult to see, or too high for wheelchair users and others to reach.

Making a button easy to see does not have to be expensive - staff at a local library were told that their strike pad for the automatic door could not be easily seen as it was on a wall that had several posters on.

They asked disabled people for advice and came up with the solution pictured here. Simply putting highly contrasting bright orange paper around the strike pad made it very easy to see and use.

Lighting is also very important for locating and using buttons and switches.
